What is different about a Registered Marriage & Family Therapist?

The Family Therapy systems approach, whether used with one person or a family, is generally brief, results-oriented, and cost-effective. We use models of therapy that help people use their own strengths to support growth and create effective changes in their lives.
Family Therapists work collaboratively with clients to resolve mental health, behavioral and relationship concerns and consider each person’s unique family, cultural, and social context.

What about fees?

OHIP does not cover private psychotherapy & counselling services. Please contact me directly for information on my fees, which are comparable with other similarly qualified psychotherapists in the Ottawa area. Payment is required at the end of each session by cash, cheque or e-transfer.

Are your services eligible for insurance coverage?

I am a Registered Psychotherapist and Registered Marriage & Family Therapist with a psychologist-supervised practice, which allows partial reimbursement by many extended health and workplace plans. Please check with your service provider directly to confirm eligibility for a Registered Psychotherapist supervised by a Registered Psychologist and any documentation required, such as a physician's recommendation [for your coverage provider it is important to ask your doctor to put both parents' names on any child or youth's referral if one is required]. You will be provided with a receipt for payment which includes the information generally required. It is the client's responsibility to pay each session, and to determine for themselves eligibility for and to claim any reimbursement.
I do not provide counselling for auto insurance or Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) claims.
How long does counselling last?
Each person decides on goals for counselling, which may be expanded or changed during the process. How long you choose to engage in psychotherapy is up to you, and can be discussed at your first appointment and on an ongoing basis. It is better to tell a therapist before ending therapy to allow for an ending session that reviews gains, highlights ways to maintain changes and move forward, and prepares you for ending the therapeutic relationship.
How often and when are appointments scheduled?
Appointments are usually scheduled biweekly although some persons wish to start weekly or have longer intervals, and may space sessions further apart towards the end of  counselling. Sessions are 50-55 minutes long, and child sessions are 45 minutes.
Availability: Tues-Fri, with session start times 9 - 4 [no evenings or weekends].

How will we work together?

I use a respectful and collaborative approach where together we will assess issues and goals, and help you bring your personal strengths to what has brought you to counselling. I may integrate mainstream approaches such as interpersonal, narrative, creative, brainspotting, emotion focused and cognitive-behavioral practices. I will explain any specific practices, and invite your ongoing feedback. I am qualified to offer pastoral support, and welcome discussing the religious or spiritual side of life. Please raise questions or concerns at any time.

Counselling for children and teens

Counselling with children necessarily requires different approaches than with adults, to engage them and maintain comfort and interest in the process. Therapy may include free or directed play, written work, relaxation exercises, games, receiving therapist mail, or reading stories. Any combination of these may be used to help your child or teen develop coping skills, explore emotional issues, or find ways to solve problems. Parents are invited to participate whenever this will be helpful, and particularly for younger children may be more involved directly in sessions. If you ever have any questions about the therapeutic intent of an activity, please ask and I will gladly explain.
